Florida Man Claims Self Defense in Killing Neighbors Rooster
A man from Jacksonville blamed his neighbor who was “like his friend” for killing his pet rooster on purpose.
But James Nix, who was accused of killing the rooster, insisted that it was an accident and that it only happened because the rooster was attacking him.
“I’m defending myself, you know. I was fearing for my safety, and the chicken died.,” according to Nix in a statement.
Jason Defelice, the owner of the rooster, believes otherwise.
“I lose them to animals, but I was not expecting to lose them to my neighbor that was like my friend,” said Defelice.
Nix tried to explain his side of the story, saying: “I just checked my mail and turn around and go, and I hear, ’Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang!’ And I turn around, and there’s a chicken out there in the street. I said, ’Oh boy, here we go.’”
Here’s when things with the chicken turned sour.
“So I pick up a stick in the yard, and I try to hit it. But the chickens jumping up at me, and I accidentally knocked in the head, you know? Call it a lucky shot, whatever.”
Defelice said that he came home, and said that he saw his pet rooster. “I didn’t see my rooster at first, so I knew something was up because he would always come chase me.”
He then said that the neighborhood kids told him that Nix had beaten the rooster until it died.
”Then, I went in his yard and yelled at him, and he finally came out and said he killed him,” Defelice said.
Defelice then called JSO, but he said that JSO “didn’t do nothing” so he called animal control instead.
“Next thing you know, he calls the chicken police on me,” Nix said. He claims he still doesn’t get why his neighbor would have reported him to the police because a lot of chickens die everyday, anyway.
“Chickens die every day, people — at Churches, Popeyes, Kentucky Fried Chicken.”
