Florida man blows himself up at graduation party – Witnesses say he didn’t have explosives and don’t know how he did it.

DELAND, Fla. — A DeLand-area man was killed early Monday.

Officials say 51-year-old Florida man died in an apparent accidental explosion at a bonfire during an outdoor party.

The sheriff’s office and the state fire marshal are investigating.

“There’s been an accident. He’s dead. There’s somebody dead,” a 911 caller said.

A graduation party at a home on Third Court near DeLand ended tragically when a 51-year-old man was killed. Investigators say FM and other adults were sitting in the outdoor patio area on the property at about 3:30 a.m. when FM walked over to the bonfire in the yard.

“It looks like – I don’t know, like an explosion or something. He was walking here out by the fire and something exploded,” the 911 caller said.

A spokesman with the state fire marshal’s office will look at any kind of possible fireworks incident. One witness described a loud hissing sound for several seconds, while another described a thud-like noise. However, according to the report, “all parties on scene denied the victim having any type of explosive device, fireworks or otherwise.”

“We need somebody immediately,” the 911 caller said. “Oh my God.”

Witnesses tried to help the victim but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators described traumatic injuries that appeared to be caused by some kind of explosion.

Investigators say they hope to learn more about the cause and manner of death when they get the results of an autopsy expected soon.

The initial sheriff’s office investigation did not identify any source of the apparent explosion.
